Hazel Margaret Stoddart

Our loving mother Hazel Margaret Stoddart (nee Poole) passed away at Bastion Place on January 29, 2012 at the age of 92. She was born in Vancouver October 19, 1919, where she spent her life until moving to the Shuswap in 2005.

She is survived by her 3 daughters, Helen J. Stoddart, Leslie M. Stoddart, Joanne E Jarvis (nee Stoddart), Graeme Jarvis, two grandchildren Julie K Wong (nee Jarvis), Glenn C. Jarvis, and 4 great grandchildren.

Hazel was married to David G. Stoddart for 61 years before he passed away in 2002. The fact that she was 4 ft. 11 in. tall and wore a size 5 shoe while David was 6 ft. tall and wore size 13 shoes quickly earned her the nickname “Tiny”.

Our mother loved the outdoors and the many “Snowbird” years of travelling South in their trailer. She taught her love of gardening to her daughters who have grandly carried on the tradition. She always had pets around her, especially cats. While living in Surrey she volunteered at the SPCA where she gave comfort to the homeless animals.

She will be remembered for her love of music, baking, flowers, special laughter and having a cheerful disposition.

As per her wishes there will no service but if you would like to make a donation in her name to the Shuswap SPCA it would be appreciated.

Clara Johnston

Clara Johnston passed away very peacefully in Shuswap Lake General Hospital on Friday Jan. 20, 2012. At her bedside were her dear friend Joan Ellenor and her son Jim. She was pre-deceased by      her parents and husband Norman Johnston (1965). Clara was born in the small Grand Trunk Railway divisional point town of Rivers Manitoba on Aug. 11, 1910. She was the only child of James and Lily McNeil. Clara’s childhood years were spent in a variety of small southwestern Manitoba towns until her high school principal father secured a permanent position in Brandon MB. Despite wishing a career as a children’s book illustrator, Clara entered teacher training (Normal School), graduating from Brandon College in 1929. At age 19 her first teaching position was in the small community of Rorketon MB in the proverbial one room country school teaching grades Kindergarten to Grade 10. She found room and board with the David Johnston family and their son Norman, who would later become her husband. However, after a year of teaching, Clara followed her parents in their retirement move to Vancouver. She often talked of her years working in Blackburn’s market and from Clara’s accounts it was clear Vancouver’s downtown eastside was colourful even in those depression years. True love must have beckoned for after a couple of years she moved back to Manitoba to re-unite with the Johnston family, and to marry their son Norman in 1937. A teaching position was available so it was back to work in Rorketon and it was during this period that Clara and Norman became lifelong friends with Bert and Helen Ackerman. Helen was the other school teacher in the rural area and she and Clara no doubt valued each other’s mutual support. In 1945 Clara and Norman came west by CPR to visit her parents in Vancouver. A stop over in Salmon Arm to stay with friends resulted in them picking fresh cherries off the tree on the Tiernan’s Gleneden farm. What a delight! The decision to move to Salmon Arm was made. A cherry tree always remained an important backyard feature of their Salmon Arm home. They arrived in 1946 and Norman’s parents followed a year later. Bert and Helen Ackerman moved to Canoe shortly thereafter. Norman and Clara moved into a new house on Okanagan (Merton Hill) where Clara resided until she made the decision to move into Picadilly Terrace at age 97. Clara found a teaching position at South Canoe Elementary and Norman managed to make a fledgling insurance agency successful. Son Jim was born in 1950, but with the shortage of teachers in the      growing community Clara was soon back teaching at Salmon Arm Elementary. In 1956 South Broadview Elementary was opening and Clara transferred to this new facility. Here she had many happy years but moved back to Salmon Arm Elementary to finish her career in 1976. Retirement after 47 years of teaching brought a whole new life for Clara. She continued her passionate involvement as a founding member of the local SPCA, the hospital auxiliary, the Retired Teacher’s Assoc. and the Canadian Cancer Society. Oversea trips (Europe, Israel, China, Russia) were organized often with her great friend the colourful Elizabeth (Bunty) Lowe. Tours of Great Britain with close friends Les and Joan Ellenor were cherished memories. The summer sojourns at the Shuswap Lake cottage at Annis Bay were of great importance. A big moment for Clara was the celebration of her 100th birthday at the SAGA Art Gallery. There were over 300 signatures in the guest book! How honoured she felt! By this time she had outlived most of her own generation of friends but typical of her, she had simply replaced them with a younger group. Clara’s final four years at Picadilly Terrace were good ones … she made them good! She was actively involved with life until one week before her death and as would have been her wish, she did not linger on. Clara will be deeply missed by her loving son Jim, her legion of friends, old and new, as well as the vast number of students from her Grade one and two classes. Clara was in essence an optimist and made the best of whatever life handed her. As Rae, one of the Ackerman sons said, “Clara was always so forward in her thinking, alive with curiosity and supportive of people in their endeavours.” She loved this community, and believed it returned her love in many ways. A Celebration of life service will be held in South Broadview Elementary School on Sunday afternoon, January 29, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Doctor Daryl Auten officiating. Tributes will be shared by family and friends followed by a reception. Donations in memory of Clara can be sent to the S.P.C.A., 5850 Auto Rd. S.E., Salmon Arm, B.C. V1E 2X2. Email condolences may be sent to Clara’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Bowers Funeral Home and Crematorium, Salmon Arm, BC

LAKESHORE NEWS January 20, 2012 OBITUARIES

Kölmel, Herbert Anton

10.21.1930-12.22.2011

With sadness we announce the passing of Opa at Mountain Lakes Community Complex, Nelson BC, December 22nd, 2011 in his 81st year. Predeceased by his father Ambrosius, mother Rosa, brothers Johann and Bernhard, sisters Elisabeth and Marianna, Survived by brothers Karl-Heinz, Georg and Peter. Loving Father of Audrey and Christopher (Carolyne). Cherished Grandfather of Katie, Chelsea, Tibo and Mira Belle. Although Herbert lived in Enderby, BC since retirement at age 57, he spent the last 10 weeks of his life in Nelson due to the very debilitating and rapid progression of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related form of lung cancer. His courage and innate serenity was an inspiration to all around him, especially his family who were touched by valour in his final days. Thanks to the care-givers of Lombardy Cottage, for their genuine compassion and humanity each and every day. He is greatly missed by his family and many dear friends. A cremation of Herbert’s remains at the Nelson Crematorium took place with family present on December 27th, 2011. Interment of Cremated Remains at the Nelson Cemetery. A Celebration of Life to follow in Enderby in the Spring. Herbert Anton Kolmel was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, but ever since he was a little boy he wanted to go to Canada. Herbert was 20 years old (1950) when he moved to Canada, and came on the ship “SS Columbia”. Herbert was the first person in his family (of 7 siblings) to come to Canada. When Herbert arrived in Canada he only had five dollars in his pocket and could hardly speak or understand much English. When he was at the immigration office he met another new immigrant from England, who was a prisoner of war in Germany and knew some German. He helped my grandfather translating the job ads. Herbert’s first job was in a hospital in Ontario and he was working as an orderly. It didn’t take long to find the job he was looking for. Machinists were in high demand and that’s what he was trained for. He worked on a tobacco farm (Hamilton, Ontario) fixing the farm machinery. Ontario is where he met my grandmother, Marianne (who was also a new immigrant from Bavaria) when he was 23 years old. Herbert worked his way across Canada. He moved to Alberta because the weather was not as harsh as Ontario’s. Here he worked for the CPR and repaired the steam engines in Calgary. At first Herbert only received sixty cents per hour, but then after working there for a while he received one dollar an hour. There were really no big hardships along the way for Herbert. While in Alberta, Herbert lived in a boarding house run by 90 year old Pearl Hillhouse, who was the first stagecoach driver to Alaska (she personally knew Billy the Kid). Herbert decided to see more of the country, so he moved to Vancouver Island because he heard it was very beautiful there. He moved there in 1955, and married Marianne the next year. They had 2 children, Audrey and Christopher. They moved to Vancouver shortly after and built a beautiful alpine style house in Capilano Heights. Herbert got a job as a plant superintendant/machinist at Western Fibres (where he worked until he retired). The family moved to a 5 acre mini farm in White Rock in 1966. There were only one or two cars on the freeway for the daily commute to Vancouver! They raised rabbits, chickens, geese, goats, sheep, a cow, and horses and also ran a 5 acre plant nursery which they bought just up the hill. Herbert moved to a log house on 5 acres In Enderby. He retired in 1987. He grew his own vegetables in a gigantic vegetable garden (which he harvested, canned, and froze). He made jams and jellies from the fruit trees and berries he grew and his specialty was the wine made from his grapes. One of his many hobbies, besides fishing, camping, building things, and reading, was wood carving and wood turning, He created bowls, candle holders, cowboy boots, treasure chests, cooking utensils, some of which sold at stores in North Vancouver and Whistler. He also took great joy in his 4 grandchilden, Katie, Chelsea (Audrey) Tibo, and Mirabelle (Carolyne & Christopher).

Written by Chelsea Mainwaring as a school project.

Rose Marie Lindsay

1923 - 2011

Rose Lindsay passed away suddenly on December 24, 2011 in Salmon Arm, BC at the age of 88 years. Rose was born in Salmon Arm where DeMilles Farm Market is now, in 1923. Rose unexpectedly entered the world in a tent by the Salmon River Bridge whilst the family harvested a potato crop. She was predeceased by her dearly loved husband John Lindsay and baby son, Stuart, from her first marriage along with many other relatives. She is survived by her daughters; Barbara (John), Patricia (Louis), grandchildren; Richard, Tara, John, James, Lisa and great-grandchildren; Sierra and Ty.

Rose began her life on the shores of Shuswap Lake at Pierre’s Point, named after her Secwepemc grandfather Pierre Moyese. Her mother, Sabina, died when she was only 3 years old. A loss she mourned deeply to the very end of her life. Her grandfather raised her till she had to attend a residential school. Grandpa Pierre, instead, paid for her to attend a Catholic convent in New Westminster to ensure she was treated well. She spoke of fond memories growing up with the nuns. When she returned home she spent a great deal of time in Kamloops in the company of the famous cowboy Andy Manual. He caught a wild blue roan stallion in the hills above Kamloops. Andy trained and gave him to Rose. She could be seen riding him from as far away as Chase to Armstrong, it was nothing in those days to pack a nice dress, ride 20 miles and dance all night.

With a strong, independent spirit, Rose worked and travelled throughout the United States alone. She returned home to her beautiful Shuswap where she met her husband of 60 years, John Lindsay, working at a horse logging camp in the mountains above Scotch Creek. They settled on a homestead on Dilworth road in Sorrento where they struggled in the early years to make a life. They had many hard times and setbacks, the Bangs Disease wiped out their cattle. They ran sheep up in the mountains across Shuswap Lake above Celista, herding them all the way from Sorrento. Rose enjoyed the sheep until the market for wool fell. However, they tenaciously kept on farming and even tried dairy farming when there was a market for cream. She raised her two daughters Barb and Pat all the while growing a large garden, canning the produce from the fruit trees and raspberries. The girls had fond memories of riding the ponies that their parents sacrificed to give to them. Many happy memories were spent picnicking and swimming at Sunnybrae.

Rose was known as a warm and vibrant personality who loved to share. She was a gifted story teller. We loved to hear her narrate the stories of her life and Native legends that her grandfather Pierre Moyese passed down. Her memory was impeccable when it came to storytelling. It was her gift, as she enthralled audiences young and old. Rose was an elder of the Adam’s Lake Indian Band and fluently spoke the Secwepemc language. Rose loved her family immensely and cherished her time with them. She was unique; a one of kind personality. Life was difficult for Rose at times as she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis from the young age of 4 years. She always found a way to carry on through her periodic bouts of crippling arthritis attacks.

Rose passed away 2 months and 3 days after her beloved husband. From beginning to end, through joyous and tumultuous times, Rose and John loved and cared for each other deeply throughout their lasting relationship. We will miss them both dearly; comforted in the knowledge their souls are together, now and forever.

Rose Marie was laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Sorrento, BC alongside her husband John on December 31st, 2011.

HOOPS, Ruby Gladys

January 6, 1929 –December 18, 2011

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Grandmother, Ruby Hoops, on Sunday December 18, 2011 at the age of 82 years at Hillside Village, Salmon Arm, BC.

Ruby Johnson was born in Evelyn, BC to John and Bjuty (Julia) Johnson.  She was the second of seven children.  Times were tough in those days so at the age of seven, Ruby went to live with her Uncle Fred and Aunt Selma Rosberg (Poppa & Nannie) who had two sons but desperately wanted a daughter.  She grew up there with her “brothers” (cousins) Orville and Fred Rosberg.

Ruby met her future husband, David, when she was still in school.  David’s sister was one of Ruby’s teachers.   After high school, Ruby made her way to Vancouver to study nursing.  She graduated as a Registered Nurse and soon after married David in April 1951.  They settled in Vancouver and started their family which included Gordon, Theresa and Peter.  Ruby supported David’s calling to the Ministry and soon the family found themselves moving around the province.  They finally retired to Enderby, BC to spend their final years amongst friends and family.

Ruby lived a full life and was very strong in her faith. Her family was her first priority but her church family, extended family and many friends were extremely important to her as well. She was a happy, content person, full of life and energy even when she developed Parkinson’s Disease. It didn’t get her down - she faced every day in a positive way. She helped everyone she met and always had a kind thought and words of encouragement for them. She was a very loving and kind soul and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her and the many lives she touched.

Ruby was predeceased by her husband, David in 1996 and her daughter Theresa in 2010.  She is survived by her loving family:  sons Gordon (Frances) of Toronto and Peter (Veronica) of Salmon Arm and son-in-law Jim Goodlake of Castlegar.  She is also survived by her nine grandchildren:  Dan, Erin, Alannah, Zoe, Sarah, Barrett, Brennan, Cassidy and Tyson.

There will be a Memorial service on Monday January 2, 2012 at 2pm at St. Andrew’s United Church in Enderby, BC.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society of BC.

Ruth,  Lilian Jean Clare

August 2, 1924 - December 3, 2011

The family of Lilian Jean Clare Ruth are saddened to announce her passing on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 9:15 a.m. at Shuswap Lake General Hospital with her family close at her side.

Born in Vancouver General Hospital, to Goldwyn and May Leach, Lilian became a pioneer resident of Salmon Arm.

Lilian married the late Donald Fred Ruth on August 10, 1943. Soon after her marriage they were separated when dad went overseas to serve his country, and mom then enlisted in the army and was stationed on Vancouver Island for 2 years. While dad was overseas he sent money home to mom to purchase their farm and orchard, which was located where the College, Recreation Centre and Arena now stand. After dad returned home the two planted apple trees and started their life together farming. From this mom started the first fruit stand in Salmon Arm. Many will remember the totem pole (erected in 1959) being a significant land mark where they sold all of their fruit that was grown on the farm. Thus this was Totem Fruit Stand. The need for storage forced the building of a large root house which, when the weather got too cold the sales of the apples were then done out of the root house, which was also located on the Ruth property. Mom worked close alongside dad and they were always together supporting each other to make a living.

Life was not always easy as there was no car and mom would often have to walk down Tank Hill to town to Askews to get groceries, and then haul them arm in arm up the hill, and hope that someone would drive by to pick her up. Three boys were born, Gerald in 1947, and then 10 years later, Robin and then Derek. Family became very important to mom; they became a very close knit family with the boys contributing to the success of the farms, which became the foundation to the Pedro Gonzales Fruit & Garden Ltd. This is now run by the guidance of Robin and his sons, Dale and Greg, along with their wives, Jennifer and Nicole.

Mom was predeceased by her son Gerald in 1980, her beloved Donald in 1989, grandson Scotty and son Derek both in 2007; her brother, Bob Leach, and sister in law, Dorothy Bennett.

Lilian will be missed by her remaining family, Robin (Joyce), daughter in law, Donna; grandsons, Dale (Jennifer), Greg (Nicole), and the sparkle in her eye, her great grandchildren, Landon, Ella, Kendall, and Jenelle, “ We will miss you Grams”; as well as nieces, nephews and friends. Monday night dinners will never be the same.

A time of visitation was held from Bowers Funeral Home on Thursday evening, December 8th at 7:30 p.m. with an opportunity for the friends and family to have a final “toast” in her memory.

A celebration of life service will follow on Friday afternoon from Bowers Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. with Jack Bowers the funeral celebrant. Honors will be presented by comrades of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Interment will follow in the family plot at Mt. Ida Cemetery, with a reception following in the Mountainside room at Bowers, catered by friends of TOPS.

Pallbearers are Dale and Greg Ruth, Daniel Bullerwell, Shane Rozas, Leo Patenaude, Peter McGanon; Honorary bearers are Kaleigh Bullerwell, Shawn Clesson, Nicole, Jennifer, Landon, Ella, Kendall and Jenelle Ruth.
