LAKESHORE NEWS, JULY 30, 2010 OBITUARIES
CONNIE CHAPMAN
Connie Chapman passed away on July 12, 2010 in Salmon Arm at the age of 69. She was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, the eldest of six children.
She is survived by her children: Larry (Darlene) Federink, Joyce (Harold) Penner, Keith (Lisa) Federink, Arnold (Brenda) Federink and Doug Jones; grandchildren: Amanda (Marlin), Amelia, Lawrence, Dana (Wilmer), Aleacia (Jacques), Sidnee, Marlee, Mathew (Melinda), Andrew, Jared; great granddaughter Lena Mae. Three sisters; Lucille (Charlie) Belsham, Marlene McLeod, Donna Moleski, brother John Chapman and numerous beloved relatives and close friends.
Connie was predeceased by her father and mother, Floyd and Hilda Chapman; brother Bud Chapman; companion Ray Maas; good friend Peter Federink and grandson Jason Gardiner.
Connie loved the outdoors, sunshine, warm and short winters; fresh fruit and vegetables, water, beaches, animals and wonderful people; so naturally she settled easily into the Salmon Arm area 15 years ago. Connie was known for her love and care for the wellbeing of others. This was expressed through her passion for Body Management; it allowed her to utilize her gifts and abilities to offer relief to those suffering from pain.
Connie loved to travel - gypsy, road runner and vagabond were labels she wore with a smile. She needed little or no excuse at all to set off on a road trip. Connie also had the instincts of a survivor which were probably honed by her love of camping and living off of the land. Her children and grandchildren well remember the dandelion and bulrush meal experiments, as well as the medicinal concoctions made from herbs and weeds.
She loved God with all her heart. This love for God translated into her love for others - to whom she gave freely of all she had. Her faith in God and prayer sustained her through the many trials and difficulties of her life. Despite life''s upheavals, Connie loved to laugh; her tee-hee''s and giggles will live on in the memories of all those who knew her. She loved nothing better than to visit with family and friends while sipping a hot drink.
Connie was one of a kind. She was loved by all who knew her.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for your support and sharing in their time of need. Grateful thanks to Dr. DeWet and the medical staff at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital.

GARNET BLAIR JACKETT (Sgt. Ret.)
1943 - 2010
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our amazing husband, father and grandfather, Garnet Blair Jackett. Born on Aug. 19, 1943 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to parents Harold and Marjorie Jackett.
Garnet grew up in Winnipeg playing and excelling in the sports he loved. From baseball, to hockey, curling and later in life to golf, his skills netted him
numerous awards and more importantly lifelong friendships.
In 1964 Garnet began training for the RCMP in Ottawa N Division. There was never any question if Garnet was choosing the right job. Born with a name synonymous with Red Coat, he proudly entered into service as a police officer. After completing training, Garnet took his first post to Nelson, B.C. He served a short time there before being transferred to Kimberly, B.C. where he was introduced to the great love of his life Janet, through her protective and loving brothers. Garnet and Janet were married in Cranbrook, B.C. on Apr. 1, 1967 and soon settled in Creston, B.C. where they began their life together and their only daughter Jennifer Lynn was born.
In 1970 Garnet and his young family were transferred to the Lower Mainland where he worked in various capacities including GIS, Airport Special Squad, Serious Crime, Joint Forces, Attorney Generals Dept. and Staffing before coming full circle back to General Duty.
While his work took him to various locations around the Lower Mainland, the family settled for 23 years in North Delta. Garnet always found time to share his wisdom and skills coaching not only Jennifers baseball teams, but several rewarding seasons of Pony division boys baseball as well. He faithfully sat and cheered the many ballet festivals, choir concerts, piano recitals and plays. He refereed sleepovers and kissed skinned knees. He was a wonderful Dad.
He and Janet were avid curlers and spent many days and nights at the North Delta Thistle Curling Club competing and enjoying the camaraderie of the sport.
Garnet and Janet enjoyed their days in North Delta and were reluctant to move after so many years in the community. But, a beautiful posting to the sunny Shuswap persuaded the couple to take one last transfer to Salmon Arm.
After 32 years (1964-1996) of outstanding service to the RCMP and the community, Garnet retired to a life of golf, gardening, curling with Salmon Arm Curling Club, family and new friendships. Garnet enjoyed retirement and would frequently awaken early enough to enjoy the sun rising over "his lake". But, even in retirement his connection to his fellow RCMP led him to serve as past President of the Shuswap Veterans Association.
Garnet was very proud of his family; particularly his four grandchildren. He loved to hear the hockey and rugby scores. He followed school accomplishments, ballet recitals and always brought Tim Hortons treats when visiting his clan.
Garnet had much to be thankful for and he counted his many blessings as he on many occasions over the years was forced to fight for the life he loved. Garnet had the sprit of a warrior.
His life lived was a testament to that, and he will be deeply missed by his soul mate and wife Janet Jackett (nee Epp), his daughter Jennifer (Rob) Atkinson, his four grandchildren Devon, Keelan, Alyssa and Aidan. His many bothers and sisters in-law; Wayne and Bev (Terrace, B.C.), Ron and Pat (Blind Bay, B.C.), Barry and Lynn (Cranbrook, B.C.), Ken and Kay (Cranbrook, B.C.), Keith and Val (Sorrento, B.C.) and many adoring nieces and nephews. As well as his extended family in Surrey, Lee & Mo. Garnet was predeceased by his parents & sister Joyce Lalonde.
A memorial and celebration of Garnets life will be held in his honour on Sat. June 19, 2010 at 4:00 pm at the Shuswap Lake Estates Lodge, 2405 Centennial, Blind Bay, B.C.
Janet and family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Grant McCallum, Dr. Paul Etheridge, the incredible nursing staff at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, the ladies at the Lab and of course family, friends and neighbours for their support.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Box 1141 Salmon Arm, V1E 4P3 or to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation, Box 265, Salmon Arm, BC, V1E 4N3.

MERVIN "ASHLEY" HUBENSKY
November 14, 1941 - May 20, 2010
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ashley Hubensky on May 20, 2010 at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital with his partner Crystal and best friends Marvin and Vickie Knight and Sharon Anchikoski, at his side. He fought a courageous battle with cancer for the past 7 months.
Ashley leaves behind to mourn his loving, long time partner of 28 years, Crystal Bowman; son Darrin Grafton (Sue) and granddaughter Teagan; stepson Chris Bowman (Darlene) and step-grandchildren Kelsey and Dillon; step-daughter Tracy Bowman (Brian) and step-granddaughters Dezerea and Shaelynn; sister Dianna Chalmers; nieces Suzie and Wanda (Joe) and great nieces Caitlin and Taylor; uncles Stanley and Russell (Mary) Hubensky; aunts Colleen Cowell, Stella Hyra, Eleanor Powell and Marie Davidson and numerous cousins. Ashley was predeceased by his parents, Kaye and Alex Hubensky.
Ashley was born in Prince George and at approximately age 5, the family moved to Sardis, BC. In the mid 50s the family then moved to Mara, BC where Ashley finished his schooling at Enderby, BC. He lived in Vancouver for several years where he got his certificate in barbering. He moved back to the Okanagan and barbered in Enderby and finally back to Salmon Arm where he opened Ashleys Barber Shop. After 30 years of barbering, he finally retired in 1997. Ashley and Crystal lived on his mothers homestead and helped take care of his mothers farm raising Dexter Cattle and horses for 20 years.
Ashley loved to travel and did so extensively, visiting most every corner of the world. After Crystal retired in 2007, they bought a travel trailer and their travelling bug started, first with a trip across Canada in 2008. He loved life and people and was very family orientated. Ashley will be greatly missed by family and his many, many friends.
We respect Ashleys request for no formal funeral service. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hepburn, Dr. Main, Cheryl and the nursing staff at SLGH for their kind, compassionate and efficient care.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request that donations in Ashleys name be made to the Shuswap Hospice Society.
It would be Ashleys wish for people not to grieve, but rather to share a glass of wine or a beer, a cherished moment, a laugh or two in memory of him. We will forever miss that smile and all his wonderful stories. Ashley, you will forever be in our hearts. Enjoy your new journey, till we meet again.
